Geffen RecordsCold frontman Scooter Ward is featured on the new Breaking Benjamin single “Far Away,” which is currently the number-one song on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. Before “Far Away,” Ward’s highest-charting single was the 2003 Cold single “Stupid Girl,” which was also a collaboration of sorts — the track was co-written by Weezer‘s Rivers Cuomo.
“I was such a big Weezer fan,” Ward tells ABC Audio. “I used to wear the guitar strap with the lightning bolt on it [that Cuomo wore] before we were signed.”
“[Cuomo] was one of my idols, so for him to even have done that for us was huge,” he adds. “I’m just blessed that he was a part of something in [the] Cold catalog.”
“Stupid Girl” peaked at number four on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, and has become Cold’s signature tune. However, Ward was originally not a huge fan of the track.
“At first, I was young and immature, and we didn’t really want that song to be out,” Ward explains.”Then the label put it out, it did what it need to do, and they were right.”
Almost 20 years later, though, Ward now enjoys playing “Stupid Girl.”
“Now it’s just fun,” he says. “As soon as the guitar parts start up, the fans get all pumped up, and the whole Weezer part in the verse with the ‘whoa-whoas,’ everybody joins in. It’s really fun.”
Cold released their latest album, The Things We Can’t Stop, last September.
